Stone Mountain Park is a state owned 3,200 acre park located 15 miles east of Atlanta, Georgia.
The park offers many year-round recreational options, historical sites, and events.
It also includes a campground with 250 RV sites, as well as yurt rentals, tent campsites, safari tent rentals, and RV rentals for staying in the Stone Mountain Park campground.
The park surrounds a large rock mountain (hence, the Stone Mountain name).
The mountain rises 825 feet above the ground in the surrounding area, and visitors are able to either hike up the mountain on a 1 mile trail or take a cable car ride to the top.
There are many other activities inside the park, including kayaking, stand-up-paddleboarding, golf, hiking, biking, train rides, and many annual events including festivals and Christmas festivities.
There’s also a nightly laser show during April to October. Be sure to check out the Stone Mountain Park website to learn more about what is available.

Stone Mountain Park is perhaps most well-known for its controversial Confederate carving on the side of the mountain. The carving depicts three Confederate leaders of the Civil War riding their horses — President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas S. “Stonewall” Jackson.

Stone Mountain Park Campground Location
For anyone visiting Atlanta, this campground is likely one of your best options for highly rated parks close to the city center. It is located in a suburban area with plenty of shops and amenities in the vicinity. It takes about 30 minutes to get to downtown Atlanta from this location, depending on traffic.
Stone Mountain Campground
The campground is located along the banks of Stone Mountain Lake near the main park entrance gates. You must first enter through the main park entrance gates and pay the entrance fee for the Stone Mountain Park in order to access the campground area. In 2018, this entrance fee is $20 per vehicle.
However, you will not need to pay the fee each time you enter the park. Once you pay the parking fee at your first visit, you’ll be given a dated voucher for the length of your campground reservation that allows you to come and go as often as you like without having to repay the entrance fee each time.

Campground Discount Program
Stone Mountain Campground is also a member of the Passport America discount campground membership program. For $44 a year, Passport America members receive 50% off over 1,800 campgrounds. At Stone Mountain Campground, the discount is valid for one night Sunday through Thursday nights year round, except when Stone Mountain is hosting special events. Given that Stone Mountain’s campground registration fees range from $31 to $72 each night, a Passport America membership can almost pay for itself with one stay at Stone Mountain. Campground Layout
When you pull into the campground, the registration and check-in office is located to the left.

The campsites in the campground are located along several loops, with those campsites that are directly on the water being the most popular.

Some campsites are pull-through sites, but the majority are back-in campsites. They also vary with whether they have full or partial hookups, and are priced accordingly.

Many of the loops have campsites that have direct water views as they are directly on the water. Swimming is not allowed in Stone Mountain Lake, but kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and other activities are allowed. Boat rentals are available at another area of the park.

Campsites that are not directly on the water have easy access to see the water. We stayed in our Airstream at a campsite near the water and still had good views of the lake and the mountain.

If you don’t have an RV, you can always stay at the campground in one of their rental RVs, in a tent, or in one of their yurts for rent.

Stone Mountain Park Campground Amenities
The campground has restrooms with hot showers available for campers, as well as washers and dryers available for use. Each campsite has a grill, picnic table and fire ring. There’s also free wifi available and cable TV at select campsites. A general store has the basics for what you may need while camping. For campsites that don’t have full hookups, there are two dump stations available near the camp store.

The campground also has a swimming pool open in the summer months and a year-round playground for the kids. Also available is a sand volleyball court and a horseshoe court.

Climbing Stone Mountain
There are many recreational activities to engage in while at Stone Mountain Park. One of the most popular is a hike to the top of the mountain along a one mile trail on the west side of the mountain. The walk-up trail is located on the opposite side of the mountain from the Stone Mountain Park campground area.

The hike is well-marked and follows a yellow painted line up the mountain, so it’s easy to follow and you’re not likely to get lost. The trail starts out relatively flat, but quickly increases in steepness. There are handrails to help you climb the steepest areas.

Keep following the painted yellow line and you’ll make it to the top. While it does get steep, this is a family-friendly hike and there are plenty of families with small children who make the hike without any problems.

Once you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the Atlanta area. On a clear day, you can see 60 miles in any direction. Even on a hazy day, you can still see the Atlanta skyline off in the distance.

The park has tower viewers that you can use to see off in the distance from the top of the mountain.

There are restrooms, a snack bar, and a souvenir shop located at the top of the mountain where you can refill your water bottle if needed. (There are also restrooms at the base of the mountain near the parking lot where you start your hike up to the top.)

You can also take a cable car to the top of the mountain using the park’s Skyride and hike down, or vice versa. It’s about a one mile walk back to the Skyride area from the base of the hike trail if you choose to take the Skyride up the mountain and hike down, so plan accordingly.

Summary
Stone Mountain Park campground is a great option for campgrounds near Atlanta due to its vicinity and the many available recreational opportunities inside the park. In fact, Stone Mountain Park is one of the highest rated attractions in the Atlanta area so is worth a visit in its own right. The campground offers a convenient option for staying close to Atlanta and also makes for a great weekend destination for people who live in the Georgia area.
